In this blog entry, former Our Moon student Joseph discusses his volunteering experience at Play It Forward.
In the past 2 months, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Play It Forward, a non-profit organisation that mainly uses football as a tool for empowering youths. Not only that, but they also go a step further by offering essential programs like teaching digital skills in schools and an after-school literacy program – a program focused on providing students with additional academic support. It’s truly amazing to see how the organisation uses sports (football) as a foundation while expanding its reach into areas that equip young people with skills for life.
My role focused on tutoring mathematics and science for grade 9-12 students, especially those in examination classes. This experience was much more than just about academics – it was about helping students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and prepare for what’s next. Working with them to prepare for their end of year exams instilled a special sense of purpose to my days. Seeing students show up for additional classes after school, work hard, face challenging concepts and experience those “lightbulb” moments reminded me of their dedication and the importance of a supportive learning environment.
I learned a lot along the way, too. Explaining complex topics to students with different learning styles taught me the value of patience and adaptability. It wasn’t always easy, but every session reinforced my belief in the importance of educational support and mentorship.
I’m incredibly grateful for this experience and proud to have contributed in a small way to the students’ journey toward reaching their goals. Big thanks to Play It Forward for giving me this chance to give back, learn, and grow. Here’s to continuing the journey of empowering young minds – through both sport and education!
