We are taking part again in this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge. Having managed to secure £2500 in match funding, every £ up to the first £2500 that is donated will be matched. Our target is to raise £5,000 this year.
Why do I do what I do?
There are bright and motivated young people in Zambia, just like there are all over the world, who leave school with amazing grades. The difference is that many of them will have fought to stay in school. Only 28% of those starting primary school manage to complete secondary school and only half those gain their leaving school certificate. The main reason is usually lack of funds – for teachers’ pay and for students’ fees and uniforms. Despite our students’ amazing grades, they have so few opportunities ahead of them – the route to university is precarious, takes two years and even if admitted, the dropout rate is so high – around 65% – again often because of funding.
Why do I love what I do?
I have the chance to get to know these students really well. I work with them closely and do everything I can to find education opportunities that suit them. Our Moon gives them a chance to study something they love and a platform from which they can make a difference in the world. We also instil in our students a social conscience. This means they understand that with the university opportunities they receive come with a responsibility. Right from the beginning of our programme, they start their journey of giving back by educating local out-of-school children.
What do you need to do?
Please make a donation via the Big Give Christmas Challenge from 30 November to 7 December starting and ending at midday. If you would like us to send you a reminder, please email me: helen.leale-green@ourmoon.org.uk.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!
