“Our Moon gave me the gift of choice”

For many of Zambia’s bright but poor young people, even if they manage to get to University, they are pushed into one of two careers – medicine or engineering.

Through Our Moon, young people like Mercy learn about many other options that are available to them. They learn how to use their skills and expertise in a field that interests them. Something that may not have been possible without the Our Moon programme.

“When I first came to Our Moon, I was excited for the chance to go to university to gain knowledge and make a change in others. With my good grades and family pressure, I assumed I would have to study medicine. However, Helen made me realise that many students just aren’t aware of what choices are out there.

Our Moon helped me realise that I can do whatever I want to do with my grades and my life!

In one of our lessons with Our Moon, I was introduced to climate change and food security. I decided that I’d like to try and help improve food security in Africa.

Food is, and always will be, essential for everyone all around the world. We need agriculture to fill stomachs and create jobs. I’d love to see more women working in agriculture too, as many people think it’s a course for men. I would like to prove differently!

I am now studying for a degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at United States International University, based in Kenya. I am particularly interested in finding solutions, both locally and across Africa, to the issues of hunger that I see many people – including my family – face every day. I am also deeply concerned about health issues in the country due to hunger and poverty and would like to find out more about what we can do to prevent outbreaks of diseases like cholera and typhoid.

So many things in my life are happening that would not have been possible without Our Moon. I am looking forward to my future – a future that I choose.”
